The Ham Radio Village is bringing amateur radio to Kernelcon 2026! Whether you're a seasoned ham operator or you've never touched a radio, stop by our village to discover the intersection of amateur radio and information security.
Ham Radio Village is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to delivering high-quality amateur radio educational content, hands-on experiences, and license testing at hacker conventions and community events.
Get on the air! We'll have a live high-frequency (HF) radio station set up and making contacts. See firsthand how radio operators communicate across hundreds or thousands of miles without relying on any internet infrastructure. Try your hand at making a contact — licensed operators will be on hand to guide you.
We'll have a DMR and P25 hotspot running on 441.000 MHz simplex — bring your HT and connect! The DMR hotspot has access to Brandmeister talkgroups, including the Ham Radio Village talkgroup on TG 83177826. The P25 NAC is 293. We'll also be monitoring the CONHAM frequencies throughout the conference:

Join us for presentations covering the many ways ham radio and cybersecurity overlap. Topics include RF fundamentals, software-defined radio (SDR), signal analysis, and how amateur radio skills translate directly to security research. Whether you're into RF hacking, emergency communications, or just curious about what's on the airwaves, there's something for you.
Ready to get your amateur radio license? We'll be running FCC license exam sessions during the conference. Walk in, take the test, and walk out a newly licensed ham radio operator. Study resources will be available at the village, and our volunteers are happy to answer questions and help you prepare. All three exam levels (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra) are available.
